Campaign Finance & Advocacy
We advise nonprofits on a variety of matters related to political and legislative activity. We represent political action committees and advise advocacy groups, labor organizations and trade associations on IRS and Federal Election Commission regulation of communications with members and the general public. We advise nonprofits on the scope of permissible election-related activities under federal and state laws, on making the section 501(h) lobbying election, and on the rules imposed under the Foreign Agents Registration Act and federal and state lobbying registration and campaign finance laws. We also provide counsel on new legislative requirements of recent years, including the Lobbying Disclosure Act provisions affecting deductibility of dues paid by members of professional associations that lobby and the registration and reporting requirements for 527 political organizations.
Michael B. Trister and B. Holly Schadler are co-authors of the "Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002: Provisions Affecting Nonprofit Advocacy Organizations," Exempt Organizations Tax Review (Tax Analysts: May 2002), an analysis of the recently enacted campaign finance legislation.
